An Australian diplomat, Burton was experienced in Cold War diplomacy, civil strife, reforming organizations, resistance to change. He had ’been there’ and he found much to criticize. He knew that words and ideas were not enough: there needed to be instruments of change.

This webinar will outline the main principles of his pioneering work. Burton was key to the foundation of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) in 1964, and of the Conflict Research Society in the UK. He thought that words and ideas were not enough: there needed to be instruments of change.
About the speakers:
Karin Utas Carlsson, a Swedish retired pediatrician with PhD in peace education on conflict resolution with special interest in John W. Burton´s work to influence the understanding and resolution of conflict to attain nonviolence and peace at all levels.
Pamela Burton, BA.LLM (ANU), youngest daughter of John W. Burton, retired lawyer and mediator; primary author of ’Persons of Interest: An intimate account of Cecily and John Burton’ (ANU Press, 2022) and Co-editor with David. J. Dunn and Hans Günter Brauch of ’John W. Burton: A pioneer in Conflict Analyss and Resolution’, (Springer, 2024).
David J. Dunn After postgraduate study in the United States and London, he taught International Relations and Security Studies, principally at the Universities of Staffordshire and, latterly, Keele, where he was an Honorary Senior Research Fellow, before retirement several years ago. Dunn is the author of ”From Power Politics to Conflict Resolution: The Work of John W. Burton” (2004) and editor of ”John W. Burton: A Pioneer in Conflict Analysis and Resolution” (2025).
